My Thoughts:
Blog Review of “A Vast and Gracious Tide” by Lisa Carter
Journey with me to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where the wind and sea bring healing and hope. This book opens with a beautiful love song of the Welsh Revival called Here Is Love. I’ve never heard the song before, but the words speak to my soul.
“Here is Love, vast as the ocean, loving-kindness as the flood, when the Prince of Life, our ransom, shed for us His precious blood… through the floodgates of God’s mercy flowed a vast and gracious tide.”
This novel is easy to read. It’s a light suspense and even the more violent scenes are tactfully done. This story will keep you guessing as it twines together recent murders and arson, and a seventy-year-old mystery. Who can they trust?
There are several lovable secondary characters that you will enjoy, and maybe one (or two) secondary romances forming.
“Love was a fragile thing. As fragile as a sandcastle at high tide.”
Caden is a hardened veteran and occasionally his language does reflect that, but it’s mild and sparse. This is a redemption story, but it’s well-written and organic to the story. These characters are hurting. They’ve faced pain (emotional and physical) that, God forbid, anyone should have to go through.
“Suppose you try and succeed? Maybe that’s the problem. If you succeed, it means you’ve moved into a new life, and that scared you to death.”
I liked the fact that the conflict was not easily resolved, it was realistic. You will find yourself pulling and cheering for these characters as you invest yourself in their heartaches. You’ll love getting to know the hardworking “Bankers,” the year-round residents of Hatteras Island. I loved that this story is about “normal” blue collar workers and local law enforcement, it’s so much more relatable.
This book deals with the issues of loss and PTSD. It takes these characters to the very edge of human strength, and reveals the truth we all must grasp. Our hope, our strength lies not in ourselves, but in the one who loved us and died for us.
“For the first time, hope was tangible. So real he was holding it in his arms. A future, possible only with her.”
