Author: Dawn Crandall
Publisher: Whitaker House

In this captivating novella by Dawn Crandall, Nicholette Everstone is already a widow at the age of twenty-two: her husband was murdered on their wedding day. She has just returned to Boston after two years of mourning in Europe. Although her husband was loving, the marriage was an arranged one, and Nicholette would like to wed again–this time for love…and to someone safe.
As she acclimates to life in Back Bay again, Nicholette meets someone she can’t help but fall for. But when she learns of the danger and sacrifices Cal Hawthorne takes on for the safety of others, will her heart be strong enough to keep her fears of “what if” at bay?
Interview with Dawn Crandall
What inspired the idea for Enchanting Nicholette?
I’ve thought about writing a book for Nicholette ever since I finished The Bound Heart (book #2)… and I knew just the kind of hero she needed–someone who seemed a little dangerous, but who she couldn’t help but fall for despite the fact. I didn’t know who though, until after I finished writing The Cautious Maiden (book #4) and Cal Hawthorne had come on the scene.
I was actually going to write the novella about Roxy Blakeley–the sister of the hero in The Captive Imposter (book #3), but her story was becoming a little too complicated for being a shorter story. And it wasn’t really going to be associated with any other the other characters from the first four book… where as Nicholette was perfect because she actually was an Everstone now, and therefore I could label the story as part of The Everstone Chronicles.
What did you as an author take away from writing Enchanting Nicholette?
That I definitely always need to write from a finished outline. My primary goal at the beginning of writing Enchanting Nicholette was to reach between 20K and 35K words, so I figured it would be simple… but then I started writing it, and things kept changing and I kept writing like I usually do, in the pace of a 90K novel. So I basically had to rewrite the middle of the book about five times while I was trying to get the pacing just right for the shorter length. And then Whitaker House contracted it for 35K and 50K… which was a relief to me! When I added the epilogue, as suggested by my publisher, it ended up being 53,000K words.
This newest release is book 5 in the Everstone Chronicles. What have you learned from writing a series?
I’ve loved writing a series! It’s so much fun to discover what’s really going on behind the thoughts of the side characters we’ve met in consequent books! I did very specifically write each one to be read as a stand alone novel as well. I wanted each one to make perfect sense and be it’s own things apart from being a part of the series. I tell readers that they can read them in any order, but that it sure is a lot more fun to read them chronologically. I have lots of readers tell me they continually reread the series over and over and will pick up new things every time.
If you could go to tea with one of the characters in Enchanting Nicholette, who would it be and why?
I would pick Cal’s sister Mabel Hawthorne. She’s so spunky for her time, and into mischief. And there are so many things she must be feeling, tucked down deep inside concerning certain aspects of her life. I want to write a book about her someday!
What message do you hope readers take away from this book?
What I’d like readers to understand from reading Enchanting Nicholette is that our stories are never quite done—even when it seems everything is wrong or damaged beyond repair, God can make something new. And He’s been planning this “new” thing since before you were born.
What is your current WIP? What can you share with us about it?
Readers probably think I’ve been working on Roxy Blakeley’s story forever… and I kind of feel like I have. Except I wasn’t actually working on writing it. I’ve been thinking about it for probably two years. But there was also the caring of children involved, and my just plain taking a break after the second boy was born two years ago. It’s one of those things, where I have to find out what’s going on in the story between the two main characters before I can start writing. I tried a lot of scenarios with these two characters–Roxy and Ben Whitespire–and I only really got it this summer. Right now I’m about 15K words into the manuscript and it’s all working really well! When it releases, it will be called A Reckless Pursuit… a stand alone novel.
