His Encouragement #12-Purging the House

I’ve joined my blogging friends for a new facet of my blog, called His Encouragement, inspiring scriptures shared each Thursday. My hope and my prayer is that these scriptures each week will bless your heart and encourage your soul.

If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work. 2 Timothy 2:21 (KJV)

In preparing to move back to Colorado, our family has done a lot of purging of our material belongings. We’ve given stuff away to friends, and taken multiple trips to the thrift stores. It’s been surprising how much stuff we had that was never used. We’ve trashed things that were torn, broken, or stained and we’ve gotten rid of things that were outdated and outgrown.

We gave away unfulfilled dreams, plans, and good intentions. Some things were harder to part with than others. Some things took a hard look at the truth or reality, or an acknowledgement of who we are now and where we want to be in the future.

I thought about how this compared to my spiritual vessel. What am I holding on to spiritually that I may need to purge? Is is bad attitudes, selfishness, pride, jealousy, or bitterness? Is it hanging on to things of the past–dreams, plans, good intentions… Maybe it’s time to sweep out the things that are broken, torn, or stained?

Sometimes purging the spiritual takes a hard look at the truth of God’s Word and an acknowledgement of who we are and where we want to be.

What scripture is encouraging you today? Share it with us!
