His Encouragement #13-Who is your Abishai?

I’ve joined my blogging friends for a new facet of my blog, called His Encouragement, inspiring scriptures shared each Thursday. My hope and my prayer is that these scriptures each week will bless your heart and encourage your soul.

And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee. 2 Samuel 10:11 (KJV)

I know. You’re thinking that is an odd verse to share for my Thursday “His Encouragement” post. I know it is, but I was touched spiritually and I hope you will be too.

Last Sunday, how pastor was preaching from 2 Samuel chapter 10. This chapter tells the story of David’s attempt at a kindness to the king of Ammon that totally backfired on him. And so, the countries went to war. My eyes were drawn to verse 11 and it stuck in my mind.

“And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.”

These two brothers, Joab and Abishai, were setting up to face off against the Syrians and the army of Ammon, and Joab says to his brother, “If my battle becomes too much for me, then you come over here and help me, and if it gets to be too much for you, then I’ll come over there and help you.”

I just love how these two brothers were going to be there for each other during the battle. When things became too hard, they were there to give the other a boost, so that they were both successful.

The Christian life is not a competition. We are not in a race against each other. There isn’t just one prize and we have to beat each other out to win it. We’re in a battle against Satan and his armies, and every solider knows, “You never leave a man behind!”

Who is an Abishai in your life? Do you have someone encouraging you and supporting you in the spiritual battle we face every day? I’m so thankful for those in my life who have helped me along the way.

Even more importantly, who are you encouraging? Is there someone that comes to mind that could use a boost or a helping hand today?

What scripture is encouraging you today? Share it with us!

This post is fantastic, Gina! My Abishai is my mom, my husband, and my best friend. I’m super blessed to have such strong spiritual leaders in my life. And, I really hope I’m a spiritual shoulder for them to lean on too.

Wonderful post, Gina! In today’s world often I hear of people saying that they don’t need to go to church. They may go a couple time a year, but not weekly. It’s important to press together with other Christians. To worship God together and to help hold each other up! That is what church is for.

I love this post! I especially like when you said “The Christian life is not a competition. We are not in a race against each other.
