His Encouragement #7- That Didn’t Work Out So Well The Last Time

For 2020, I have chosen Isiah 41:10 as my personal verse. This lead into a theme for this year’s His Encouragement posts. Each week, I will be looking at another “fear not” of the Bible. I hope that as we journey together through these verses that we all will learn a little more about trusting God and rooting out the fear in our lives.

And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:

Genesis 46:3 KJV

I know that’s a really long title for today’s post, but it’s what came to mind when I read this verse. Jacob has learned that Joseph is alive and that he is the second in command in Egypt. He has asked for his father and brothers to move their families and everything they own down into Egypt and he would take care of them. Jacob packs up and they all begin this journey to Egypt, about 70 souls all together. They stopped in a place called Beersheba.

What’s interesting is that Beersheba marked important events in both his father, Isaacs’s life, and in the life of his grandfather, Abraham. He built an altar and I believe he prayed for wisdom and guidance. You see Abraham went to Egypt with disastrous results and Isaac had once been warned of God not to go to Egypt. I’m sure Jacob is wondering if this is such a good idea. God comes to him that night in a vision and tells him not to fear but to go down into Egypt and He promises to bless him for his obedience.

I think about all the people who God sent as missionaries to countries where their predecessors died as martyrs. I’m sure there were times when they second guessed God’s plan, thinking “that didn’t work out so well last time, are you sure?”

Have you tried something before and it didn’t work out so well? Maybe the whole thing blew up in your face? Maybe you tried to witness to a neighbor or a co-worker, or maybe you tried to make things right with an adversary and it went terribly wrong. Maybe you tried to sing in front of your church and fainted with stage fright. Or maybe you tried to teach a Sunday school and the kids fell asleep or worse you couldn’t keep them under control.

Is God calling you to try again? Is there something He is leading you to do even though it didn’t end well before? He says to “fear not!” Move forward in obedience, following his will, and see all the blessings He will give you as a result.
