For 2020, I have chosen Isiah 41:10 as my personal verse. This lead into a theme for this year’s His Encouragement posts. Each week, I will be looking at another “fear not” of the Bible. I hope that as we journey together through these verses that we all will learn a little more about trusting God and rooting out the fear in our lives.
Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.Deuteronomy 1:21 KJV
In our study through the “fear nots” of Scripture, we will skip through several books to the end of the Penetuch to the book of Deuteronomy. The Israelites have left Egypt, wandered for 40 years in the wilderness, and are finally ready to go into the promised land. Maybe…
Moses here is rehearsing the Israelites history to a new generation. He’s reminding these now grown children (everyone over 20 died in the wilderness) of the things that happened in the past. He’s recalling the time they last stood at this point, ready to enter the promised land, and they did not because of the giants in the land. Verse 21, is Moses’ repeat of what he told their parents 40 years ago.
Have you ever been discouraged? I looked up the meaning of the word in the dictionary. These couple of definitions fit with our verse today.
1) to deprive of courage, hope, or confidence; dishearten; dispirit.
2) to dissuade (usually followed by from).
3) to obstruct by opposition or difficulty; hinder:
Is there something that you have failed to do for God once (or twice) before?
Is there something the devil is trying to discourage you from doing for God?
Whatever is it, God tells you to “go up and possess it.” And don’t let previous failures discourage you from trying. We’ve all messed up or failed before. But the Word of God exhorts us to not be afraid to try again. This time, we just might see the land conquered!
