For 2020, I have chosen Isiah 41:10 as my personal verse. This lead into a theme for this year’s “His Encouragement” posts. Each week, I will look at another “fear not” Scripture of the Bible. I hope that as we journey together through these verses that we all will learn a little more about trusting God and rooting out the fear in our lives.
But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.John 6:20 KJV
In John chapter six, we read the account of Jesus walking on the water during a storm on the sea. The disciples saw him and were afraid. I mean, wouldn’t you be? If you saw the figure of a man floating over the water, you would probably be frightened too. Jesus calls to them and tells them, “It is I; be not afraid.” The disciples are relieved and invite Jesus into the boat with them. (In another passage, we see Peter also joining Jesus on the sea, but not in John’s account.)
As I thought about this passage, I looked up the Strong’s Concordance references for this scripture. I thought about Jesus saying, It is I, and wondered if there was some great significance to the word “I” here. To my surprise, there wasn’t. It simply means I, me, my.
Like when someone answers “It’s me,” when you ask who’s knocking on the door. Funny thing is that when someone answers that way, either we ask “Me, who?”
Or we open the door. Why?
Because we recognize the voice of the person.
Here, the disciples recognized Jesus’ voice when he said “It is I.”
When going through the storms of life, can you recognize the voice of Jesus has He calls out to comfort you? Like a loved one here on earth, can you distinguish His voice through the surrounding clamor?
John 10:27 says, My sheep hear my voice…
Do you hear His voice? Are you listening? Do you recognize His voice?
