Interview with Jerry B. Jenkins

Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you.

I’m the first adult male in my immediate family who was not a career cop. I did assist with undercover drug buys before I was married, and that cured me of any interest in doing that as a career.

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Husband, dad, granddad.

What was your favorite book when you were a kid? Did it play any part in your writing style today?

Little League Champs, and no. 😊

What book is currently on your bedside table?

New Testament In a Year and The Personal Memoir of U.S. Grant

Is writing your full-time career? Or would you like it to be?

I’ve been a professional writer since age 14 (sportswriting) and an author since age 23, and I’m currently working on my 206th book. I was also a publishing executive until the 1990s but have been a fulltime freelance writer ever since.

What has been your favorite part of the publishing journey?

Hearing from readers that something I’ve written has changed their lives.

If you could travel anywhere or any when for research where/when would you go?

I’ve enjoyed a lot of international travel: Indonesia, Africa, England, Scotland, Israel, Jordan, et al, but it would be fun to have done this in the first century.

Tell us about your first published book? What was the journey like?

The subject, an evangelist named Sammy Tippit, was 25, I 23, and we have remained friends for 50 years. He remains my spiritual hero. I had written a story about him for a Sunday school paper and queried a publisher about a book on him. They had been considering that very thing, so the timing was right.

What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

The Elements of Style (Strunk and White). Stein On Writing (Sol Stein). How to Write Best-Selling Fiction (Dean Koontz). And Rick Bragg’s stellar memoir, All Over but the Shoutin’.

Does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? If so, why?

Not sure why, but I enjoyed writing NYPD Detective Pranav Chakrabarti. I hope readers like him.

Where can readers find out more about you and your books?

http://www.JerryJenkins.com

Any current or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

I’m currently writing the third novel in The Chosen series, which was created by my son Dallas. I’ll soon update my nonfiction work Hedges/Loving Your Marriage Enough to Protect It. And I’ll be doing a book with Mike Matheny, manager of the Kansas City Royals, called The Dad Coach.
