I’ve joined my blogging friends for a new facet of my blog, called His Encouragement, inspiring scriptures shared each Thursday. My hope and my prayer is that these scriptures each week will bless your heart and encourage your soul.
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 KJV
Welcome to the Christmas Season! The fifth season of the year. I felt led to look closer at this verse in Isaiah chapter 9 through the month of December. There are five names of God found in this passage and I’d like us to examine each one.
The Prince of Peace
I think of all the names of Jesus used in Isaiah 9:6, I believe this is my favorite. The Bible has a lot to say about peace as it relates to Jesus, the Prince of Peace.
The word Prince means exactly what we think it means: sar, (sar); a head person (of any rank or class):—captain (that had rule), chief (captain), general, governor, keeper, lord,(-task-)master, prince(-ipal), ruler, steward.
But what I found when I looked up the word “peace” in this passage was interesting: shâlôwm, (shaw-lome’); safe, well, happy, friendly; also (abstractly) welfare, i.e. health, prosperity, peace:—do, familiar, fare, favour, friend, great, (good) health, (perfect, such as be at) peace(-able, -ably), prosper(-ity, -ous), rest, safe(-ty), salute, welfare, (all is, be) well, wholly.
Does that word sound familiar? Shalom. We’ve probably all heard this Hebrew word as the greeting of the Jewish people. “Peace be upon thy house.”
He is the Prince of Peace. Without Him, peace cannot exist. Not in this world and not in the next. So, as my last His Encouragement post of 2019, I’m asking you to search your heart. Has the Prince of Peace brought peace to your life, to your home, and to your eternity.
God bless you in 2020. May the Prince of Peace reign over this next year.
