Rahab’s Courage Excerpt Three

Nathan met Salmah’s eyes and nodded. Yahweh’s plan would prevail despite the warning in Salmah’s gut. He took the rear guard, watching the inner gate. Nathan made it halfway up the stairs before Salmah followed. He backed up the first stair, aware of every cart wheel rattling, every merchant haggling inside the city. He reached his left foot back and his sandal brushed the side of the step, finding air instead of the stone he expected. Arms flailing, he overcorrected and prepared for impact.

Searing pain stabbed through his ankle. He squeezed his eyes shut and sucked a breath through his teeth. By the time he had his wits about him, Nathan was no longer visible. Vulnerable to anyone who would happen by, Salmah dragged himself backward, wedging between large water jugs. Sweat beaded on his forehead. Every sound and movement from the inner gate seemed amplified. He crouched his shoulders lower.

No bones protruded from his ankle. Tentatively, Salmah put weight on his foot. No good.

Still no sign of Nathan. Breathing hard, he wrapped his ankle with his sword belt. The stiff leather from the sheath provided a comforting degree of immovability.
