Excerpt 6
“Although I’m not sure who you’ll call. Tony’s the only one in town with a tow truck and his shop closes at six. He’s open for emergencies until ten,” Jackson said.
“And what about emergencies after ten?” Ruby said through her teeth.
“They wait until morning.”
Ruby pursed her lips.
“I’ll just call Madi. She’ll be happy to come out and pick me up,” Ruby said as she began dialing.
Jackson scowled. What was the point in Madison driving all the way out here at nearly midnight when he was already standing right there with a perfectly good truck? But he let Ruby continue her call, although his scowl deepened.
“Hey Mads?” Ruby said after Madison answered the call. “I was on my way to visit you when my car broke down. I’m stuck out here in the middle of nowhere.”
Ruby paused.
“It’s Jackson’s phone.”
She paused again.
“Yeah, he’s standing right here.”
She paused yet again.
“Because I don’t want to.”
“I get that it doesn’t make sense; just come and get me!” Ruby demanded.
She hung up the phone, her scowl rivaling Jackson’s.
“Madison says you should just jump in my truck and get a ride home?” Jackson guessed.
“She hates driving out here in the dark,” Ruby muttered.
