Convinced chloroform will revolutionise the medical world, Dr. David Carbury frequently administers it to his London patients — until one of them dies. Facing a grave trial to prove his innocence and defend a drug most people view as poisonous, he makes hasty plans to buy time to bolster his case. But he wasn’t expecting to face an even deadlier challenge.
As attraction sparks not long after they meet, Grace soon suspects he’s hiding something, and David knows he can’t run from the truth forever. But neither of them could imagine the sinister threat lurking just around the corner…
Immersed in faith and intrigue, this Christian Victorian romance from award-winning author Edwina Kiernan will encourage and delight you long after you turn the last page.
The Letter Excerpt 5
As she followed her parents out to the carriage, she sighed, guilt nudging at her heart. Her home and family were good — idyllic, even.
So why was she filled with such a deep longing to leave them?
David Carbury paced the floor of the drawing room in his London townhouse.
Augustus Moss, his trusted friend and colleague, stood on the edge of the Axminster rug, his head low.
David turned to face him. “There must be some mistake, Augustus. I administered the chloroform myself. I—”
“He is dead,” Augustus said, shaking his head grimly.
David’s blood seemed to drain through him all over again.
He’d been so careful.
There had to be some mistake.
Augustus sighed. “Did you administer the same amount as you have before?”
David’s stomach tightened as he remembered the pitiable state of his patient. “He was so agitated, Augustus,” David said, shaking his head slowly. “His coughing was so violent that I had no hope of administering the opium. Not until he was calmed.”
“So you used more?”
David exhaled a deep, shaky breath. “A little more. But only a little, Augustus, and I made sure that it was still a safe amount, within the right parameters.”
Augustus’s gaze remained fixed on the floor. “Right parameters,” he scoffed. “Many physicians still consider it to be experimental. We knew that. We never should have—” He broke off with a forceful sigh.
